Shirakawa-go in the Snow

After spending a bitter-cold and somewhat uncomfortable night in our farmhouse, we woke up to a pleasant surprise!

Looking out the window

surprise

The snow was coming down like down feathers…

snowing

Without tourists, the street looked empty and deserted

deserted

Everything was dusted with fresh white powder

deserted

Locals were minding their own business, such as sweeping snow off the roof

Even the places we’ve seen before looked utterly different

Needless to say, the walking trail to the hilltop overlook is now closed

closed

But if you are like my fearless Russian friends, you march right across the barricade and declare victory for defying the rules 🙂

Because this view is unparalleled…

unparallel

Even under whiteout conditions

Making it all worthwhile to have stayed overnight and endure the harshness of winter.
