Portugal in May

My dear friends and fellow bloggers, I am back!

We spent most of May traveling through Portugal, visiting various sights and sampling local cuisine.

We began the journey in Porto.

Wherefrom we day tripped to the sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, near Braga.

We then drove through the Douro Valley – visiting wineries and tasting local wines.

From Douro Valley, we headed south, taking a detour through the mountain villages

to the historic city of Évora, where a Roman aqueduct and a Roman temple stand.

Continuing further south into the Algarve region, we stopped at beaches with beautiful rock formations

and hopped on boats to see caves.

Having had enough of seabreeze (it was actually quite windy down there), we circled back inland, visiting gorgeous monasteries along the way

to the university town of Coimbra.

Lastly, our short but sweet journey ended in Lisbon – the city of Seven Hills

Where we joined the crowd outside the Jerónimos Monastery in Belém on International Museum Day

And made day trips to Sintra

Not once but…TWICE!

The first day I got back to the States, I woke up in the morning, missing a good suckling pig sandwich; On the second day, it was the freshly squeezed orange juice that was so juicy and naturally sweet; By the third day, I was listening to Fado music online and ready to book a plane ticket back to Portugal.

Needless to say, Portugal captured our hearts and I will be sure to fill in the details of our journey in the posts to come.

      1. Sao Miguel was amazing! 6 nights wasn’t long enough. Next time we are thinking of going in May so it’s bit cooler for hiking. The humidity is so high, it was killing me. We went whale watching twice and it was amazing. So many things to do there and the food is good.

  19. Oh you did it ahead of me – you visited most of the places I’ve planed to see! Soooo jealous you Monsanto!!!!! which I gave up since no public transportation available during the school summer holiday! I’m sure you had a great time up there!

    Portugal is a nice country with a lot to explore.
    I’m glad you travelled a lot around Portugal. I don’t know some of these places, yet.
