Kanazawa -Best Sushi in Lisbon
I have finally found the best sushi in Lisbon!
Kanazawa is an eight-seater restaurant helmed by Portuguese chef Paulo Morais, who has just been recognised by the Embassy of Japan in Portugal as the gastronomic ambassador of Japanese cuisine.
The restaurant is usually booked weeks ahead. On a rare occasion (and partially due to Covid), I was able to nab a seat for lunch a day ahead midweek. Although Omakase is not offered at lunch time, the chef was kind to accommodate.

So…my friend and I were supposed to be at Lyle’s in London last week to celebrate our birthdays together.
Then…Omicron happened and London was out of the picture.
It so happened that several days ago MICHELIN Guide Spain and Portugal announced, in the auditorium of the beautiful Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, the 2022 Michelin restaurants in the Iberian Pennisula. Among the five newly awarded one-star restaurants in Portugal, there’s one in Lisbon. Its name is Cura, helmed by the 30 year old Pedro Pena Bastos, whose resume includes some of the best restaurants in the world, such as Geranium, Copenhagen; The Ledbury, London; and Belcanto, Lisbon.

Located in the heart of Principe Real, Nivà is the first Italian cremeria opened in Portugal. The Rivolta family, whose restaurant Bontan was granted a Michlin Star back in 1991, has three locations in Turin and one in Cannes, France.
A Taberna do Mar, Lisbon
A Taberna do Mar is not your typical Portuguese seafood restaurant.
Chef Filipe Rodrigues learned how to cook from his grandparents growing up in the Algarve region, he then went on to work for several Japanese restaurants in Lisbon (helped opening a few) and broadened his techniques along the way. While the ingredients are locally sourced from the nearby Atlantic Ocean, the cooking is a combination of Portuguese and Japanese.
The restaurant offers both an à la carte and a 25 Euro tasting menu.

Yesterday I found out that I had a new appointment date at the SEF for my residence card in Portugal. Due to the lockdowns, all the appointments since the beginning of the year were postponed up until Monday April 19th, when the office reopened. To celebrate this – because nowadays any good news warrants a celebration – I booked a lunch at Alma, a Michelin two-star restaurant in Lisbon, three years in a row.
