Christmas in Seattle

It is true I don’t write enough about Seattle. I figured everyone else has already done that. Only this past Sunday when the rain finally stopped, I decided to venture out and play tourist for a day.

First things first, a good lunch at the Pike Place Market Atrium Kitchen.

Night at the Opera

Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) is one of the top opera houses in the world. It was built between 1861-1869 in Neo-Renaissance style. The design received heavy criticism at the time, leading to the tragic death of one of its architects.

Hokusai and Chestnuts

Obuse, in Nagano prefecture, is known for Hokusai and chestnuts.

Katsushika Hokusai is a Japanese artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period. Hokkusai started painting when he was six years old and produced up to 30,000 art works during his lifetime. He is known to have influenced Van Gogh and Monet and has a strong impact on the formulation of Art Nouveau in Europe.

Hokusai is best known for the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富嶽三十六景), which includes the internationally recognized print The Great Wave off Kanagawa.

Sapporo Snow Festival – Susukino Ice World

Susukino (すすきの) is a red-light district in Sapporo, teeming with restaurants, bars, and hotels. During the Sapporo Snow Festival, Susukino turns into an ice world where ice sculptures line up along the street.

Sapporo Snow Festival – Odori Park

The Sapporo Snow Festival (さっぽろ雪まつり Sapporo Yuki-matsuri?) is a festival held annually in Sapporo, Japan, over seven days in February. This year, the festival dates from 5th to 11th of February.

Odori Park, stretching east to west over 1.5km through the heart of downtown Sapporo, is one of the primary festival sites. It contains several large snow sculptures, hundreds of small sculptures made by organizations and citizens of Sapporo, a skating rink, a snowboard jumping platform, and a sliding area for children.DSC_3525
