The Progress
When we arrived at the Progress, people were queuing up next door, at the State Bird Provisions, that is. We love that restaurant – known for their Californian-style dim sums. It was a little hard to get into, so we thought this time around we would try something different.

I have a confession to make.
I love Chinese food, but I am prejudiced against Chinese fusion or any type of glorified Chinese. To me, that’s just packaging. Once you strip off the bells and whistles, there is little substance remaining. So when I came across this restaurant on Eater’s list of the Hottest Restaurants in San Francisco, I quickly disregarded it.
The day came when I missed the reservation deadline for a Michelin-starred restaurant, and I wasn’t going to brave the rush hour traffic to some other part of town, I decided to give this place a try.

State Bird Provisions*
Reservations are hard to score at this dim-sum style inspired restaurant. Fortunately they set aside a good number of seats for walk-ins like us. Kin Khao*
Kin Khao Thai Eatery was just awarded one Michelin star. It is located near Union Square, making it convenient for both locals and tourists alike.
Mushroom Hor Mok Terrine:
Hor Mok is steamed custard of red curry paste and coconut cream, topped with thickened coconut milk and fine silvers of kaffir lime leaves . The most popular representation is this fish curry custard often steamed in banana leaves. BENU***
There are only two Michelin three star restaurants within the city limits of San Francisco. Among the two, Benu is the most affordable: $248 tasting menu compared to $395 at Saison. The food is Asian with a French twist. But this is not your usual fusion restaurant. Chef Corey Lee prepares dishes with masterful technique and great finesse.
