Our first day in Madeira. We visited the Sé – Madeira Cathedral
Had Bolo de Caco for lunch
The bread is not the dense type and smothered with garlic butter. Add a bottle of water it’s a €4,50 lunch. I love it!
Checked out street art at Rua de Santa
Could there be a Banksy?
And spent sometime by the sea.
In the afternoon we took the cable car to Monte.
We visited the Monte Palace Tropical Garden.
It was beautiful, even had a Japanese garden
a Zimbabwean mask and a mineral exhibition
and a lot of water elements.
After getting off the Monte, we stopped by several fruit stands along the main drag for breakfast and afternoon snack.
The baby mangoes are really tasty – they are from Columbia – and we loved the Delicous Fruit (Monstera Deliciosa).
For dinner we tried some of the Madeira specialties at Casal da Penha:
Click/swipe through the slides to see the dishes we had.
We had Bolo de Caco again (I like that bread); grilled squid and limpets; Scabbard fish with fried (Madeira’s best) bananas; and of course tuna belly that’s the special of the evening. We finished our meal with complimentary Madeira wines and took a walk to see sunset or what’s left of it. We like the food here. It’s simply cooked and lightly seasoned. The thing is when you have ingredients this fresh, you don’t want to ruin it by introducing other flavors.
Another fun-filled day in Madeira.
Coming up next: Road trip in Madeira.
Lovely-looking place.

My favorite photos are the first one (canopy of branches), the door with the tiny person at the bottom (optical illusion!), and the waterfall. The door art is really creative. Makes our American doors seem really boring!

So many colorful doors and architecture! And you gotta love just how affordable food is in Portugal! Thanks for sharing your time in Funchal with us. 🙂

We had so much fun in Madeira not long ago, enjoying the food and all the other treats. You are right about fresh food, there is nothing like that🙂
