Hiking: Eiger Trail, Switzerland

This was our fifth day in the Bernese Oberland. Because we had an easy hike the previous day, we decided to do a real one and get away from the crowds for a change. That’s why we picked the Eiger Trail.

In the morning we took the train from Wegen to Kleine Scheidegg, then transfer onto the Jungfrau Railway to Eigergletscher

Where we started our 7.5 km (4.5 miles) downhill hike to Alpiglen.

Contrary to what we’d experienced the day before, we did not see a single soul when we first set out.

This was because in mid-June, part of the trail was still covered by ice and snow.

And it was quite chilly in the morning when the sun did not rise up to this side of the mountain.

There were snow, lots of snows at the beginning of the hike

But also wildflowers popping their heads out, swaying in the wind.

Soon we passed a signpost pointing to the Heckmair (Climbing) Route of the North Face of the Eiger.

It was cold so we kept moving

Until the sun peeked through

and we gained a little bit of warmth!

There we saw our first waterfall

More snow crossing

Before getting to another waterfall

In fact, with the snow melt, there’s no lack of water on this trail.

And where the water flows, the wild flowers galore!

From where we were, we can see the village of Grindelwald

How exciting. We were there just a day ago 😛

Every now and then, the North Face of the Eiger revealed itself.

Yet another waterfall later

We found several workmen doing trail maintenance

I pictured them happy and enthusiastic from being in the nature all day. But they didn’t seem happy nor sad.

They must be accustomed to this view, unlike us office workers.

One more waterfall

And more wildflower with the North Face fully disclosed.

We were near the village of Alpiglen

But not without descending some steep steps.

Now we could relax and smell the cows

We debated whether to have a late lunch at the farm café

But I was concerned of us having to get back up the hill and over to our (the other) side, so we went straight to the station.

Back in Wengen, we had pasta at Ristorante Da Sina

Then went for a walk to the church

For a view of the Lauterbrunnen Valley at dusk

Good night Wengen from my balcony!

Coming up next: The Blumental Panorama Walk, Switzerland
