Wengen Folklore Evening, Switzerland

Back to hotel after dinner, just when we thought we’d be done for the day, we heard the syncronized clunking sound from the street…

As it turned out, it was the first Wengen Folklore Evening of 2023, held every other Thursday in the summer month

Starting with a Cowbell (or Trychlern in German) procession.

They rang it all the way to a marquee where there were women demonstrating Klƶppelspitze (Bobbin Lace-making)

The presenter introduced the event in perfect English and German

First came the Yodeling team

Then the Alphorn –  I liked it when he started introducing the big festival in Biel then said ā€œJust stay here. Itā€™s much betterā€ šŸ™‚

More yodeling after that

An Alphorn solo performance

Followed by Folk Dance

More Alphorn later

We were introduced to Coin-rolling –

In which a five-Franc coin is rolled around the inside of a salad bowl – to acommpany yodeling

Many more perfromances not captured above. But I hope you get the gist of it.

The evening started with the ringing of the Cowbells and ended with them. It was a great way to be introduced to local culture and traditions. Thank you, the city of Wengen for the hospitality!!

Coming up next: Eiger Trail, Switzerland

  1. The yodeling was so harmonious – beautiful! Would’ve loved this performance for the unique sights and sounds of the musical instruments and performers. If I ever get to Switzerland again I’ll remember Wengen.
