Back to hotel after dinner, just when we thought we’d be done for the day, we heard the syncronized clunking sound from the street…
As it turned out, it was the first Wengen Folklore Evening of 2023, held every other Thursday in the summer month
Starting with a Cowbell (or Trychlern in German) procession.
They rang it all the way to a marquee where there were women demonstrating Klƶppelspitze (Bobbin Lace-making)
The presenter introduced the event in perfect English and German
First came the Yodeling team
More yodeling after that
An Alphorn solo performance
More Alphorn later
We were introduced to Coin-rolling –
In which a five-Franc coin is rolled around the inside of a salad bowl – to acommpany yodeling
Many more perfromances not captured above. But I hope you get the gist of it.
The evening started with the ringing of the Cowbells and ended with them. It was a great way to be introduced to local culture and traditions. Thank you, the city of Wengen for the hospitality!!
Coming up next: Eiger Trail, Switzerland
How wonderful to still have such traditions. Thanks for sharing the videos. Beautiful!

The yodeling was so harmonious – beautiful! Would’ve loved this performance for the unique sights and sounds of the musical instruments and performers. If I ever get to Switzerland again I’ll remember Wengen.

Honestly I was lucky to have picked Wengen as my homebase 10 years ago during my first visit and coming back this time reassured me that it is the place to be when I visit the area.
